    I think that this is a great lesson to do with students. In my personal experience I haven't seen too many teachers implement these nontraditional approaches to multiplication, when it can be such a difficulty operation for students to understand. I like that you mentioned with the idea of not being able to use mental math,this is a problem solving strategy/skill that they can utilize.

    My question and proposal would be if you would consider providing an introduction to the lattice method as well to give students another means for solving multiplication problems. Could it be beneficial to encompass the idea of enduring understanding if students were given ample ways to solve the same problem?

  2. You are right on, this is actually a modification of an Everyday Math lesson in the same unit as using the lattice method. I appreciate your insight because I had not thought about using both methods in order to work towards an enduring understanding of different methods to solve the same problem. Thanks!
